Jonathan Xian Production Choreographer General Committee, 2015 | 1 WEEK = 7 DAYS = 168 HOURS = how long until opening night of our 15th Production! Make sure you come and see our next choreographer Jonathan Xian who went from producing a breaking production piece in 2015, to a contemporary modern piece in 2016. Hi, I’m Jonathan! I began dancing at my high school breakdance club, Soul Power, where I found myself putting my hand up to choreograph for showcases and performances. I brought some of this experience to Flare when I choreographed a few breaking pieces for gigs and production last year, which was really enjoyable. I first started contemporary dance with Flare in 2014, when I joined Kaeden’s production piece. Since then, I’ve become increasingly connected with what I’ve found to be a new, expressive art form. Last year, I continued to develop in this style, becoming involved in a couple of contemporary projects in addition to Flare, and began to choreograph this year. Outside of dance, I also study Music and Law at university. I think one of the reasons I’m drawn to contemporary is that its potential for expression is similar to that of music. Having studied music for my whole life, I find that I can automatically relate to many elements of contemporary dance, including texture and emotional content. The fact that music is always intertwined with dance is also a principle that guides me in my choreography. This year, I’ve enjoyed collaborating with Kaeden to choreograph a modern/contemporary piece. We’ve been able to take on a serious emotional topic, and experiment with new techniques and choreographic devices. Most rewardingly though, we’ve been able to watch both our dancers and ourselves grow in the process. From casting week in May to today, Flarians have worked endlessly to create the best performance that is only 1 WEEK away! So have you bought your tickets yet? |
